Ice cream idea wins $1,000 in cold cash

FORT THOMAS - Most kids love ice cream, but that love doesn't usually lead them to win $1,000.
Johnson Elementary School's Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) students won first place in the Meijer Brand School Video Contest by creating a video about a Meijer brand product and why it is as good, if not better, than other brand name products.
The competition involved students from five states and included more than 350 entries, said Dennis Daniel, Johnson's STLP coordinator.
"When we found out we won we were in complete surprise and shock," Daniel said.
The students chose to do their commercial about the different types of Meijer brand ice cream, and spent about eight hours shooting it using green screens, voice-overs and editing skills.
"I have 15 really dynamic students who never run out of ideas," Daniel said. "They are really good at being critical of what they do, I think that is why they are so successful."
Roy Smith Jr., the store director at Meijer's Florence location, said Meijer hosts these kinds of contests as a way to inspire creativity and give back to the community.
"These guys really did a neat job putting this together," Smith said.
The contest meant a lot of work for the students, but they weren't complaining.
"We had a great time making this commercial," said fifth-grader Joseph Martin. "I think I speak for everyone in STLP when I say my favorite part was eating the Meijer ice cream."
The first-place award followed a win earlier in the school year when the STLP students won a regional showcase at Northern Kentucky University for their educational video about Appalachian culture.
Winning the showcase qualified them for the state competition in May.
